Orthodontist preparing to remove a patient’s Invisalign attachments by taking out her trays

You’re finally nearing the end of your Invisalign treatment. There’s no doubt you’re excited to greet the world with your newly straightened smile, but your orthodontist has thrown a curveball at you. You have Invisalign attachments, and they need to be removed before your treatment can be considered complete. Unlike your clear trays, these attachments are fixed to your teeth. So how is your orthodontist going to remove them, and will it hurt?

This post will cover this and more; just keep reading for the answers!

What Are Invisalign Attachments Used For?

Generally speaking, Invisalign aligners are just as effective at straightening teeth as metal braces. However, sometimes the trays alone can’t create the pressure needed to properly align more stubborn pearly whites. In complicated cases like this, orthodontists usually adhere these small, discrete “bumps” to your teeth. This allows Invisalign aligners to get a better grip on your teeth so they can exert more pressure.

How Will My Orthodontist Remove Them?

With a gentle set of special tools. Removing Invisalign attachments is fairly straightforward; all your orthodontist needs is a soft drill that sprays water and a polishing bur. They’ll carefully wear down the attachments with the drill, then finish by giving your pearly whites a quick polish.

Does The Process Hurt?

Taking off Invisalign attachments is generally considered painless and doesn’t require an anesthetic. Most patients instead describe the process as “feeling strange.” While your orthodontist works with the drill and polishing tool, you might feel the vibrations echoing through your teeth. After leaving the office, you might also experience lingering discomfort from this sensation, but it typically doesn’t last long. You should be able to continue with your day as normal.

What if I’m Anxious?

That’s okay! Orthodontists know that oral treatments can make patients nervous, even when pain isn’t expected. If you feel anxious or start to experience sensitivity during the removal process, let your orthodontist know. To them, your comfort is just as important as the treatment itself, and they’ll be happy to accommodate you.

While having your Invisalign attachments taken off might feel strange or unpleasant, most patients have a painless experience. The process is quick, too, and can take as little time as 15 minutes. Once your orthodontist starts removing your attachments, get excited – you’ll officially complete your Invisalign treatment soon!
