It seems like the worst of COVID-19 is behind us, but a lot of new cases are still popping up each day. Plus, we are now well into the cold and flu season. Unfortunately, that means extra diligence is required if you want to minimize your chances of coming down with an illness. Individuals who use Invisalign need to take special precautions. What can you do to protect your overall health, as well as the health of others? Here are some practical tips:
Only Touch Your Aligners with Clean Hands
Your hands are likely to touch a lot of surfaces that are full of viruses and bacteria. For example, doorknobs, countertops, and even faucets can all collect harmful microorganisms. To reduce the risk that your hands will transfer bacteria to your aligners, wash your hands each time before you touch them, and be sure to use proper handwashing technique. If you cannot immediately access soap and running water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer instead.
Do Not Place Your Aligners on Your Desk
It has been found that the average desk surface has 400 times more germs than a typical toilet seat! That may be because toilet seats are cleaned quite frequently, whereas you might wipe down your desk just once every few days (or perhaps even less often than that). Even if you have the good habit of regularly disinfecting your desk, it would still be smart to err on the side of caution and not put your Invisalign aligners on your desk’s bare surface. Instead, place your aligners in their designated storage case whenever you are not using them or cleaning them.
Stay Hydrated and Moisturized
Chilly air outside, combined with hot air inside, is a recipe for dry mouth and chapped, dry lips. If you are battling a cold or flu, you might be especially vulnerable to these problems, which are uncomfortable and might even increase your risk of tooth decay.
Drinking plenty of water can help to combat dry mouth, and it is quite acceptable to drink plain water without taking Invisalign out of your mouth. If your lips are dry and chapped, a lip balm can help. Be sure to use a colorless product so it does not stain your aligners. If any waxy residue from your balm gets on your Invisalign, it should be easy to wipe off.
Remember that Germs Can Linger On Your Aligner
If you come down with a cold or flu, you will not need to throw away your aligner and ask your orthodontist for a replacement. However, it is important that you thoroughly clean it. Although the chances of it re-infecting you are low, it is still smart to play it safe. Also, because germs might linger on your aligner for a few days, you might need to temporarily stop kissing your loved ones.
Cold and flu season is here! Invisalign wearers can use the above tips to protect their health and that of their loved ones.
